Shezad Dawood (UK) works across installation and film, looking at a discursive model of practice that takes in both mystical and literary/historical narratives. Often drawing on his complex heritage, his projects have been influenced by Sufism as much as Samuel Beckett. His large-scale interventions often work with musicians, actors and other collaborators across a breadth of global locations, including the Middle East, Europe, India and the Americas.
Shezad’s work has been exhibited internationally, including Tate Britain (Tate Triennale, 2009), the 53rd Venice Biennale (2009) and the Busan Biennale (2010). Publications include Feature: Reconstruction (Bookworks, 2008), Viaggio al termine della notte (Galleria Riccardo Crespi, 2008), Intensive Surfaces: Shezad Dawood (Århus Kunstbygning, 2010) and Artist’s Studio (Culture Shock Media, 2007). Shezad was one of the winners of the 2011 Abraaj Capital Art Prize.
During his residency, Shezad conducted research for an unrealised project in the Syrian Golan in collaboration with Delfina Foundation and Film and Video Umbrella. The collaborative team is now working on a new project in Sidi Ifni, Morocco.
