María Gabler (Chile) creates site-responsive works, including temporary installations and sculptures made from construction materials and debris, that critically engage with their surroundings. Her practice begins from the idea that the built environment is not merely a passive container for human activity, but is intrinsically tied to ideologies, power dynamics, and social organisation. She has primarily developed her work through architectural site-specific interventions, where she explores the socio-political dimensions of space by developing constructive solutions that replicate or transform existing spatial elements, altering the way they are perceived and experienced.
During her residency, María will investigate the complex interplay of historical epochs, architectural styles, construction techniques, and materials in London. Through the documentation and collection of materials from urban spaces in flux—streets, demolition sites, construction zones, building renovations, and ruins—she plans to explore how construction materials reveal underlying systems of power, decision-making, and spatial organisation.
María’s practice has been shaped by a range of exhibitions and residencies, both in Chile and internationally. Exhibitions include a solo show at Proxyco Gallery in New York, and in Chile at institutions such as Galería Gabriela Mistral, MAM Chiloé, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo, among others. She has participated in over twenty group exhibitions and has been an artist-in-residence at ISCP (New York, USA), HANGAR (Lisbon, Portugal), and Cobertizo (Jilotepec, Mexico).
In 2024, she received First Place in the Artespacio Joven Competition (Chile) and was selected for the BilbaoArte 2024–2025 Fellowship (Spain). Her work has also been recognised by the Cobertizo–Ayarkut Fellowship (2023), the Arte CCU Fellowship (2021), and the Ca.Sa Collection Award (2021), among others.
María holds a BA in Art from Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and an MA in Visual Arts from the Universidad de Chile.
María was born in and is based in Santiago, Chile.
