Magdi Mostafa (Egypt) is a Cairo-based artist who works primarily with site-specific, research-driven sound projects, multimedia installations, and experimental music. Exploring the conceptual relationships between sound and space, Mostafa’s work often draws on his interests in the phenomenological experience of the individual in the city and the nostalgia of outmoded technologies.
Magdi began his experimental investigations into sound and architecture in 2001. Since then, his work has been featured in solo and group exhibitions internationally, including Cairo Documenta in Cairo; Space, Barcelona; the Biblioteca of Alexandria; Artellewa Gallery; and the Cairo Opera House.
Magdi has been awarded prizes by the Egyptian Ministry of Culture for his work in the Salon of Youth on three different occasions, and has participated in residency programs in the USA and Europe, including at the Bronx Museum for the Arts (2010), Cittadell’arte in Italy (2010), and the Hanger Arts and Media Center in Spain (2009). In 2001, he participated in Artissima18 International Fair of Contemporary Art, Turin.
His composed soundtracks has been hosted on different online radios, and solo-programmed on 100 radio station.
As part of A.i.R. Dubai, Magdi was commissioned to produce a site-specific work in Al Bastakiya as well as the Madinat Arena for Art Dubai Projects.
