Gabriella Hirst (Australia) is an artist and writer whose practice spans moving image, performance, installation, and gardening as a site of critique and care. Her work explores tensions between care and control, with recent projects examining the connections between plant taxonomies, landscape painting, art conservation, and nuclear history. Hirst blends archival research with personal, anecdotal storytelling to engage with these themes.

At Delfina Foundation, Gabriella will develop research around stillness and preservation in the context of political stasis. Her focus will be on the mechanisms of ‘self-help’ apps, the fragility of broader mental health care systems, British ‘Keep Calm and Carry On’ rhetoric, wax museums, and death masks.

Gabriella is the recipient of the 2020 ACMI/Ian Potter Moving Image Commission and a Marten Bequest Scholar. She has undertaken residencies at Villa Romana in Florence, Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, ZKU in Berlin, and Cove Park in Scotland. Recent exhibitions include Kunsthalle Osnabrück, Tin Sheds Gallery, and the Sainsbury Centre. Her film screenings and lecture performances have been featured at the 2023 Circa Prize, Dia Art Foundation, CARA in New York, and the Wende Museum in Los Angeles. Her artist book Battlefield was launched at the Printed Matter NY Art Book Fair in 2024.

Gabriella was born in Sydney, Australia, and is currently based in Berlin.
