Ana Bravo-Pérez (Abya Yala/Colombia/Netherlands) is an artist and filmmaker. Her work draws on migration, memory and violence. She uses her own migratory and diasporic experiences as a starting point for her artistic projects investigating suppressed narratives and collective histories. These experiences have been crucial for building an artistic practice in which personal, decolonial and geopolitical questions merge.
Seeking to deal with violence visually without representing it, and aiming to heal colonial wounds, she uses coal, cotton, gold, and plants like coca and toquilla to investigate colonial legacies and continued exploitation in the present-day.
Ana is also interested in cultivating networks of care within the territories and communities she inhabits. Her collaborative approach involves working closely with weavers, Indigenous and diasporic communities to create works that honor the profound connections between people, Mother Earth and Earth beings.
Ana aims to expand her practice during the residency and will pursue two strands of research: archival research in London on photo and film footage from the Andes-Amazon region, and social field research around collectives of diasporas from Abya Yala based in London. This will inform the creation of a new body of work connected to stories of women working for peace building, collective healing, and the defence of diverse ecosystems crucial for the survival of all of us.
Her work has been shown at the 15th Havana Biennial; EYE Filmmuseum, Amsterdam; Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; Thai Film Archive, Salaya; Casco Art Institute, Utrecht; TarraWarra Museum of Art, Healesville; Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven; Cinematheque, Bogotá; Salt Beyoğlu, Istanbul; Centre for Contemporary Art, Lagos; and at film festivals such as IDFA, Hot Docs, Ji.hlava, Oberhausen, Havana, among others.
Ana was born and raised in Pasto, Andean-Amazonian Piedmont in Abya Yala. She is currently based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
