Haevan Lee (Netherlands/South Korea) is an artist whose practice explores the buffer zone as a psychological and perceptual space where geopolitical conflict permeates landscape, memory, and the body. Drawing on field research, storytelling, and historical research, she works across painting, installation, video, and writing to examine borders as spatial, affective, and embodied conditions.
During her residency, Lee will research ornamental patterns found in artefacts from Eastern and Western histories of warfare. Her project explores the relationship between ornament, nature, and historical memory, positioning decorative surfaces as sites of cultural and psychological transformation.
Recent projects and exhibitions include Forbidden Territories: 100 Years of Surrealist Landscapes at Museum Arnhem (2025); Battleground at Bradwolff Projects (2024); Soft Intimacies at Stroom Den Haag (2024); Bangkok Art Biennale at Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (2020); and DMZ Culture Station at Seoul 284 (2019). Her publication Battleground was published in 2024.
Lee holds a Master in Artistic Research from the Royal Academy of Art (KABK), The Hague (2022), and a Bachelor of Oriental Painting from Sungkyunkwan University, Seoul (2016).
Lee was born in South Korea and is currently based in The Hague, Netherlands.
