Nazira Karimi’s (Tajikistan/Kazakhstan) work explores the collective memory and environment of Central Asia, with a focus on the lasting impacts of colonisation. She is actively involved in several female artist collectives, where she contributes to art and knowledge production in the region.

Building on her ongoing work, Nazira plans to focus further research on the Tajik civil war of the 1990s. Nazira aims to investigate the largely unexamined consequences of the war and its connections to regional conflicts and broader global dynamics. Her goal is to uncover how these events, rooted in the collapse of the Soviet Union and its imperial legacies, continue to resonate today.

Nazira’s work has been featured at international venues, including the 60th International Art Exhibition,  Foreigners Everywhere, at the Biennale Arte 2024 and documenta 15 in 2022, where she contributed to the public programme of the DAVRA Research Collective, initiated by Saodat Ismailova. In recent years, Nazira has participated in various artistic residencies and presented her films and installations across Asia and Europe.

In 2017, she co-founded HORSEMILK, and in 2022, she co-founded Ruyò, two artist-led platforms and journals dedicated to advancing critical discourse in the arts, film, and theory within Central Asia.

Nazira was born and raised in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, and is currently based in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
