Watch Katesi Jacqueline Kalange introduce her artistic practice during her residency at Delfina Foundation as part of the 2026 Spring Season thematic cohort, Making and Materiality.
A visual artist from Uganda, Katesi works across sculpture, architecture and installation, exploring African indigenous knowledge systems and challenging colonial narratives surrounding traditional handcrafts. Through community collaborations, she reimagines craft as a form of knowledge and artistic expression. She discusses her ongoing body of work, Nature Invasion, which explores the relationship between nature and human-built environments, using traditional techniques and repurposed materials to address questions of culture, ecology and colonial legacies.
During her residency at Delfina, Katesi reflects on her participatory workshop, Weaving Home, inspired by childhood memories of her grandmother weaving alongside her community. Bringing people together through the shared act of weaving, she explores the exchange of stories, knowledge and traditions, and considers how her experiences at Delfina are informing a new body of work.
Katesi’s residency was supported by Delfina’s Network of Africa Patrons.
