On the occasion of the publication of Philipp Gufler’s new artist book, Projection on the Crisis (Gauweilereien in Munich), join our artist-in-residence alongside writer Irene Revell for a discussion, which takes as its starting point the artist’s long-term engagement with its subject: the beginning of Germany’s AIDS crisis.
Initiating the conversation will be a screening of Philipp’s 2014 video work (34 min) that emerged out of his research into the period – and from which his new homonymous publication evolved. The film portrays the artist in a fictional exhibition, presenting archival materials which document the Bavarian state’s harsh reaction to HIV/AIDS in 1987 and the responding community mobilisation.
The event will continue with a screening of Philipp’s latest video work, Lana Kaiser (2020) (13 min). This piece is a portrait and personal response by the artist to the life and death of the singer and entertainer Lana Kaiser, who came to fame through German version of Pop Idol in the early 2000s, with her androgynous appearance polarising audiences.
Following the screening Philipp and Irene will be in conversation, exploring the artist’s interest and engagement with grassroots archives and his work uncovering, constructing, presenting, as well as intervening in, queer histories and subjects. The event will close with a chance for audience questions.
