Xue Tan (China/Hong Kong) considers live practices as crucial points in her curatorial work, embodied as environments, encounters and conversations around the work – engaging new relationships between the audience, artists and the surroundings.
Xue is the senior curator at Tai Kwun Contemporary in Hong Kong, where she oversees the exhibition programme and recently concluded an 8-month long live art exhibition series trust & confusion. Previous projects include My Body Holds Its Shape (2020), Francis Alÿs, Wet feet_ dry feet, borders and games (2020), Phantom Plane- Cyberpunk in the Year of the Future (2019), Cao Fei, a hollow in a world too full (2018), and Rehearsal (2018). She has organised numerous special projects and events, including public art projects and Booked, Hong Kong’s Art Book Fair, around Tai Kwun’s historic compound in central Hong Kong.
At this time of change and challenges, Xue is rethinking how museums and art spaces can become active and intimate environments for social engagement, and considering new strategies for creating communities across physical and digital sites. While in-residence at Delfina Foundation, Xue will take the chance to observe and participate in the interfaces of art, experimental music, institutions and audiences across London’s art scene.
In the past Xue has worked closely with over a hundred artists in commissioning and producing new works, most recently with Pan Daijing, Tino Sehgal, Scarlet Yu and Xavier Le Roy, Tarek Atuoi, Sean Raspet, Lina Lapelytė, Sriwhana Spong, Trevor Yeung, Nile Koetting, Kazuo Kitai, Tamiko Nishimura, Yuko Mohri, Francis Alÿ, Eisa Jocson, Jason Dodge, Pratchaya Phinthong, Thea Djordjadze, Nadim Abbas, Cui Jie, Takehiko Nakafuji, Zheng Mahler, Yuri Pattison, Anne Imhof, Cao Fei, Emilie Pitoiset, Lee Lee Chan, Lawrence Weiner, and Alvin Lucier amongst others.
Xue Tan was born in Chongqing, China, she has lived and worked in Hong Kong since 2006.
