Burak Arikan (Turkey/USA) works with complex networks and has been building open platforms, and growing communities around them for over 15 years. He investigates societal issues and develops his findings into abstract machinery, which generates network maps and algorithmic interfaces, results in performances, and procreates predictions to render inherent power relationships visible and discussable. Burak’s software, prints, installations, and performances have been featured in numerous exhibitions internationally. Burak is the founder of Graph Commons, a collaborative platform for mapping, analysing, and publishing data-networks.
During his residency at Delfina, Burak will focus on a new project code named ‘Time To Live’, in which artists are invited to a new mode of art-making where artworks live in relation to one another.
Burak has presented his work internationally at institutions including Venice Architecture Biennale, São Paulo Biennial, Istanbul Biennial, Berlin Biennial, MoMA, SFMOMA, Ashkal Alwan, MAXXI Museum, Tokyo Museum of Contemporary Art, KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Performa, Transmediale, and Asia Art Archive. He has lectured and did workshops at institutions including M.I.T. Media Laboratory, New York University, Columbia University, UC Berkeley, The New School, and King’s College London.
Burak holds a masters degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Media Arts and Sciences, a masters degree from Istanbul Bilgi University in Visual Communication Design, and a bachelor’s degree from Yildiz Technical University in Civil Engineering.
