Ala Younis, UAR, 2013.

Ala Younis is an artist, curator and writer. She distributes her creative efforts among films, installations, printed editions and exhibition projects. Through her work, Younis addresses current situations through the lens of historical phenomena in a variety of ways. Using objects, film and printed matter, she often seeks instances where historical and political events collapse into personal ones.

Her work has been exhibited at the 56th Venice Biennale (2015); Here and Elsewhere, New Museum, (2014); 2nd Generational Triennial, New Museum (2012); 9th Gwangju Biennial (2012); 12th Istanbul Biennial (2011); Home Works 5 (2010); PhotoCairo 4 (2009); and BBC 4, among others.

Her curatorial projects include Kuwait’s first national pavilion at 55th Venice Biennale, Museum of Manufactured Response to Absence (2013); This land first speaks to you in signs, Cimatheque, Cairo and Archival Kabinett, Berlin (2015); Covering One’s Back, Gezira Art Center, Cairo (2013); The Crowd Behind Us (2012) and Momentarily Learning from Mega-Events (2011) in Amman. She co-founded the non-profit publishing initiative Kayfa ta, and is on the advisory board of Berlinale’s Forum Expanded.
