Visual artist and Delfina resident Alexis Blake, is looking for former or current paraplegic athletes for her new performance, Conditions of an Ideal, which will be presented at the British Museum in the Parthenon Gallery on 3 June 2016. There will also be a short film made from the performance. The athletes do not need any former dance training or performance experience.

Alexis will work with a group of women with various body knowledges, ages, histories and abilities to question historical representations of the idealised female body. Referencing Diana Watts and Dora Menzler’s contributions to the women’s physical culture movement of the early 20th Century, which drew inspiration from Greek philosophy, ideals and sculpture, this choreographic work will explore notions of national collective identity vs personal expression through form, (a)symmetry and balance in movement.

The performance will be developed out of a workshop and rehearsals with the group by using the archival material and a series of tasks/exercises that Alexis will implement.

This work has been commissioned by Block Universe Festival and Delfina Foundation.
