Food Regimes

Explore the problems inherent in the current global food system.

Following the opening of her Delfina Foundation exhibition, Accumulation by Dispossession, Asunción Molinos Gordo will be in conversation with Ray Bush, Professor of African Studies and Development Politics at the University of Leeds. Against the backdrop of the exhibition, Molinos and Bush will discuss food policy and the impact of neoliberalism particularly in reference to the Global South with Egypt as a case study.

This talk is part of a series of public events in Delfina Foundation’s fourth season of the thematic programme The Politics of Food. Subtitled Adapting this latest iteration will investigate ideas responding to the changing environment of food production.

Biography

Professor Ray Bush is Professor of African Studies and Development Politics at the University of Leeds. His work focuses on the political economy of Africa, the Near East, and the Global South.

Bush’s visiting research appointments include the Norwegian Nobel Institute, Oslo, and the Social Science Research Centre, American University in Cairo. He is on the advisory board of the Tunis based NGO Observatoire de la Souveraineté et de l’Environnement (OSAE) and is a member of the Editorial Working Group of the Review of African Political Economy where he has worked for more than 35 years. In 2017-2018, he helped convene three meetings of academics and activists in Accra, Dar es Salaam and Johannesburg on ‘Radical Transformation’ in Africa. Bush was a jurist for the African Studies Association UK book prize 2018 and also on the International Advisory Board of the Journal of Agrarian Change. He is a founding member of Thimar, the Beirut based research collective on agriculture, environment and labour in the Arab world. In 2013 he was one of five appointed by the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization to write a profile on family farming.
