The Delfina Foundation presents The Spacemakers, a group exhibition that explores artistic perspectives on the immediate challenges of creating a home, in some of today’s most diverse and harried urban landscapes.

The planning and construction of a home articulates personal needs as well as the necessity to improve on one’s general living circumstances. Ideals of a secure home of bodily comfort, and the creation of borders to protect them, significantly inform our social and spatial existences. Notions of home as personal space and as political territory are undeniably intertwined, and in urban areas throughout the world, the relationship between one and the "other" is also informed by spatial organisation strategies, led by economic and political decisions.

How do architecture and urbanism inform social infrastructures and cohesion? How do personal desires for the materiality of a home intersect with wider socio-political agendas and ideologies in the formation of urban landscapes?

Taking Palestine as its starting point and spanning examples from Cairo, Istanbul, Tehran, Paris and the U.A.E., The Spacemakers offers a global measure of the immediate challenges of producing habitats in epicenters of social, economical or political tension.

The Spacemakers is taking place across two venues (Edinburgh College of Art – Tent Gallery and Sleeper). It is part of a biennial series of events produced by Beyond Borders Productions Ltd.

Accented Residency - Selected Artists

We would like to thank everybody who has expressed an interest in Accented Residency - British Council’s Creative Collaborations. The selection panel for 2010 edition of Accented Residency took place at Townhouse Gallery, Cairo on the 14th and 15th May.

The selection committee comprising William Wells (Director, Townhouse Gallery, Cairo), Livia Pancu (Residency Coordinator, Vector Association, Iasi), Eva Langret (Programme Manager, The Delfina Foundation, London), David Martin (Programme Manager, Spike Island, Bristol) and Oyku Ozsoy (Residency Coordinator, Platform Garanti CAC) looked at 160 applications and created a shortlist of 43 artists. Christine Tohme (Director, Ashkal Alwan, Beirut) was unable to attend the meeting for personal reasons and the applications were later sent on to Ashkal Alwan for evaluation.

The final selection of eight applicants for Accented Residency 2010 was based on the match between their interest and the hosting institution's ongoing projects, the quality of their work as indicated by submitted visual documentation, their ability to demonstrate consistency and dedication in their artistic practice, and evidence that these applicants are at a critical juncture in the development of their practice, which the jury believe will be advanced by the residency.

As a process-oriented residency program, Accented creates a unique opportunities for artists and curators tp critically reflect on their practice, with no obligation to produce any work. It fosters research opportunities, supports artistic networking across partner institutions and their locations, and altogether increases mobility across the region. Finally it stimulates interaction between residents and hosting institutions, and various projects have flourished beyond the residency period.

The British Council's Creative Collaboration grant has generously supported Accented Residency for two successive years. However, given the immense interest in this program, the intention of partner institutions is always to raise further funding in order to continue this program and give residency opportunities for additional individuals in forthcoming years. Accented Residency will take place again next year, but with a more tailored focus for each participating institution, the details of which will be announced in the beginning of 2011.

The individuals selected for Accented Residency 2010 are:

Ashkal Alwan
Mohammad Allam, Egypt

Delfina Foundation
Tayfun Serttas, Turkey

Platform Garanti CAC
Iman Issa, Egypt
Alina Popa / Irina Gheorghe, Romania

Spike Island
Adnan Yildiz, Turkey

A Firm Handshake

A Firm Handshake - Shuruq Harb
Non-linear lecture, Tuesday 22 June,18:30 - 19:30 at The Delfina Foundation

Artist in residence Shuruq Harb asks: when do we start making an artwork?

Shuruq Harb's A Book of Signatures is a collection of 250 signatures from individuals named Mohammad living in Ramallah, Palestine. Drawing on their social network, each Mohammad introduced the artist to another Mohammad. The process of collecting signatures for Shuruq became an alternative way of navigating her hometown, providing a chance for improbable encounters and engaging new conversations. Tracing back to the inspirational ignition of A Book of Signatures, Shuruq Harb revisits historical events, re-examines artistic references, instigates a dialogue with other artists and ultimately finds herself making new works.

Shuruq Harb works with photography, video and text. Her artistic practice currently focuses on documenting and collecting the ephemeral as a means of navigating city landscapes. Shuruq also works towards shifting ideas about context and reference in relation to art history. She is the co-founder of ArtTerritories an online platform dedicated to artists' interviews in the Middle East, which launches in September 2010. A Book of Signatures was exhibited at Ikon Gallery, Birmingham earlier this year (2010).

The Equity is in the Circle

Artist talk: The Equity is in the Circle
Oraib Toukan
Thursday 20 May, 18:30

The Delfina Foundation
29 Catherine Place, London SW1E 6DY
Free

The Equity Is in the Circle (2007-2009) is a two-year corporate intervention led by former resident artist Oraib Toukan. It purports to auction off nation states in the Middle East, under a 100-year leasehold.  With an interest in both documentary and institutional critique, Oraib reaches out to real life experts for consultation on the steps needed to auction off this territory.  The proposal eventually results in the creation of a branded corporate initiative, entitled Nayruz Holdings.

Oraib Toukan works across media in photography, video, text, and installation, often weaving public interventions and subtle absurdity in to her practice. Thread throughout her work is a form of play and underlying irony in the situations she creates for herself and the viewer.  Oraib Toukan has a Masters in Fine Arts from Bard College, New York. Her work will soon be presented by Iniva at Rivington Place, as part of the 'Whose Map is it?' exhibition (2 June - 24 July 2010). Oraib is currently based in Berlin.

A collaboration with Visiting Arts

With participants in Artist-to-artist 2010: Doa Aly, Volkan Aslan, Ali Cherri, Robin Deacon, Delta Arts, Iz Oztat, and the Western Alliance.

What is an artist studio today? Artist-to-artist participants explore ideas around collaboration, mobility and site-specifity in relation to their working environments.

The space where artists work often represents an interface for their professional practice, in which four components play an important role: social architecture, spatial architecture, peer exchange and cultural context. Workspaces proposes to look at artists’ relationships to their working environment, considered both in a spatial and interpersonal sense.

How are artistic workspaces reshaped by international mobility? How does the place where one lives influences one’s practice? Have identification and contextualization remained the main two modes through which artists relate to the place where they live and work? How do international artistic networks alter artists’ perception of their immediate environment? How can we update the late 20th century fantasy of an ultra-mobile artistic community, who envisions the ‘world as its studio’, in the light of a new geo-political and environmental order? How are artistic practices, networks and support structures responding to this change?

Decolonizing Architecture Residency

The Delfina Foundation and Decolonizing Architecture are collaborating on a residency in Bethlehem, at the Decolonizing Architecture studio. Lorenzo Pezzani will be the first practitioner to take part in this project. The residency will be an opportunity for Lorenzo to gain intensive experience in practice lead research and spatial activism, within the conceptual frame of the studio, in one the world's most charged conflict areas.

A collaboration between architects Eyal Weizman, Sandi Hilal and Alessandro Petti, Decolonizing Architecture arose from a need to open up an 'arena of speculation' about the future of Palestine, and to encourage both imaginative and practical planning about the areas that already have or will be liberated from direct Israeli control. The work of Decolonising Architecture has been exhibited internationally, including recent exhibitions at Palais des Beaux Arts, Bruxelles (BOZAR, 2009), the Venice Biennale for Architecture (2008), the 11th Istanbul Biennale (2009) and the Rotterdam International Biennale of Architecture (2009). More information about Decolonizing Architecture

Lorenzo Pezzani is a PhD candidate at Goldsmiths University’s Centre for Research Architecture. His practice-based research looks at how the afterlife of various buildings, monuments, migrant bodies and images could enhance, through profanation, the production of a new postcolonial ecology.
